Resistant TB Strain Is Proving Deadly To HIV Patients

چکیده
M O N T R E A L — There is a disconnect in communications between physicians and parents of children with asthma, according to an analysis of data from a new global asthma survey. Parents and physicians disagree on the amount of time dedicated to asthma education in the office; who initiates discussion about medication side effects; and the level of compliance with asthma medications. The North American pediatric findings of the Global Asthma Physician and Patient (GAPP) study also confirm what most physicians already know: Asthma medication compliance is low; patients with poor compliance experience more symptoms; and side effects lead patients to switch or drop medications. The authors conclude that patient compliance and outcomes could be enhanced through better physician-patient communications and asthma education, and the availability of new treatment options with lower side-effect profiles, Dr. Ronald Dahl of Aarhus (Denmark) University Hospital, and his associates on the GAPP Survey Working Group reported in a poster at the Seventh International Congress on Pediatric Pulmonology. The GAPP survey is the firstever global quantitative survey to uncover asthma attitudes and treatment practices among patients and physicians. The survey was conducted between May and August 2005 in 16 countries and included a total of 5,482 online and telephone interviews with

XDR-TB in South Africa: No Time for Denial or Complacency
January 2007 | Volume 4 | Issue 1 | e50 On September 1, 2006, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced that a deadly new strain of extensively drugresistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) had been detected in Tugela Ferry (Figure 1), a rural town in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) [1], the epicentre of South Africa’s HIV/ AIDS epidemic. Of the 544 patients studied in the area in 2...
متن کاملStudy of HIV seroprevalence in Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients with Special Reference to Multidrug Resistant Mycobacteria
This study was planned to determine HIV seroprevalence among pulmonary tuberculosis patients, to characterize the isolated mycobacteria into typical and atypical strains and to evaluate the drug resistant pattern of mycobacterial isolates. The study aims to correlate multidrug resistance (MDR) and HIV seropositivity status in pulmonary tuberculosis patients. During the year 1994-1997, 750 pulmo...
متن کاملTransmission of a multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain resembling "strain W" among noninstitutionalized, human immunodeficiency virus-seronegative patients.
Since 1990, several outbreaks of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) have been described among institutionalized patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We describe a community MDR-TB outbreak among HIV-seronegative patients in Cape Town, South Africa. Isolates were characterized by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis and dot-blot hybridization anal...
متن کاملHIV Infection and Geographically Bound Transmission of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis, Argentina
During 2003-2009, the National Tuberculosis (TB) Laboratory Network in Argentina gave 830 patients a new diagnosis of multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB and 53 a diagnosis of extensively drug- resistant (XDR) TB. HIV co-infection was involved in nearly one third of these cases. Strain genotyping showed that 7 major clusters gathered 56% of patients within restricted geographic areas. The 3 largest cl...
متن کاملNosocomial spread of human immunodeficiency virus-related multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in Buenos Aires.
A steep upsurge of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) was recently observed at a referral treatment center in Buenos Aires City. Between January 1994 and June 1995, TB isolates resistant to at least five drugs were recovered from 101 of 272 HIV-infected inpatients. Highly resistant isolates from 77 patients underwent restriction fragment leng...
